Abstract

Abstract Aso Volcano is located in central Kyushu and is one of the most active volcanoes in Japan. The volcano is of worldwide fame for its huge caldera (Fig. 1) formed by the outflow of four voluminous pyroclastic flows during the late Pleistocene. The eruption of 553 A.D. is probably the oldest historical record in Japan and the volcano has continued to be active since (Japan Meteorological Agency, 1991).
