Abstract

The penetration of wind power grid connections has been increasing. How to use wind turbines to participate in system frequency regulation has become a research hotspot. This paper summarizes the research progress of wind power participating in system frequency regulation from two aspects of wind turbine and wind farm. For wind turbines, different control strategies such as virtual inertia control, droop control, virtual synchronizer technology, rotate speed control, pitch angle control, additional energy storage system, etc. are compared and studied. The principles, advantages, disadvantages, and application scope of each control strategy are clarified. For wind field, the coordinated control method between different fans in wind field, the coordinated cooperation between wind field and other conventional units, and the wind field frequency modulation technology applied to offshore wind power are analyzed. Finally, the challenges and research directions of wind power participation in frequency regulation are pointed out: long-time regulation capability, frequency regulation capacity evaluation, frequency regulation control algorithm, and coordination with other energy forms.
