Abstract
This paper describes an industrial-based research project which is developing a flexible machine vision workbench environment for the rapid-prototyping of real-time industrial inspection systems. This will provide for the rapid configuration of systems by an engineer and, using novel verification techniques, allow rapid assessment of candidate solutions. The objective is to support the development of advanced machine vision systems which offer a high degree of reliability, together with known logical and temporal performance. The whole project has been designed using Rumbaugh's OMT methodology and has been developed using Kappa - an object-oriented development environment with an integral inference engine. All designs and code were generated in compliance with international standards. This paper provides an in-depth look at the functionality of the system, and what benefits it provides to "real" engineers.
