Abstract

The advent of polymeric power cables quite naturally led to the requirement for compatible accessories. This paper is limited to terminations that follow the conventional fluid filled cable philosophies, adapted for polymeric cables. By the time that polymeric cables were entering the market, fluid filled cable terminations were established in three main categories, viz. outdoor, oil immersed (transformer direct connections) and SF/sub 6/ immersed (GIS or metal clad switchgear direct connections). The CIGRE WG21-06 have produced Publication 89 entitled 'Accessories for HV Extruded cables' 1995. This report covers joints, including transition joints, as well as the termination types mentioned above and a glossary of definitions. The report illustrates typical examples of the various categories within the broad headings. In this paper, the more common types of designs in current use are considered.
