Abstract

We study the tightness of positive contact surgery on Legendrian knots in tight contact 3-manifolds. Along with more general results, we give a partial generalisation of a result of Lisca and Stipsicz: if L is a null-homologous Legendrian knot with tb(L)≤−2 and |rot(L)|>2g(L)−1+tb(L), then contact (+1)–surgery on L is overtwisted. We also give a condition under which all positive contact surgeries on a Legendrian knot are overtwisted.
