Abstract

1. 1. This investigation reports an oversulfated chondroitin sulfate in the urine of normal subjects and of patients woth hypothyroidism. 2. 2. Chondroitinase digestion of this polysaccharide(s) demonstrated two types of disaccharide units: one type was monosulfated at C-4 of the hexosoamine while the other was disulfated with the extra sulfate likely on C-2 or C-3 of uronic acid. 3. 3. THe oversulfated chondroitin sulfate was excreted as a polysaccharide units-peptides complex containing predominantly serine. Some terminal disaccharide units in the protein linkage region appear monosulfated, while others are disulfated.
