Abstract

In this paper, explicit formulas describing the overlapping in two-parametric nonconservative systems are derived. These formulas use information on a system only at the merging point and allow us to perform qualitative, as well as quantitative, analyses for the behavior of the characteristic curves in the vicinity of this point. A quadratic approximation of the flutter boundary is also obtained. It is shown that the features of the characteristic curves are related to convexity properties of the flutter instability boundary. 1. We consider a linear autonomous nonconservative mechanical system without damping and gyroscopic forces, which is described by the equation
