Abstract

Purpose: In sports medicine, meniscal tears (especially those in the avascular zone) are serious, unsolved problems that may lead to OA. Biomaterial-guided gene transfer is a promising strategy to enhance the healing of meniscal lesions upon delivery of reparative genetic sequences. The goal of the present study was to test the competence of an alginate hydrogel to transfer an rAAV vector carrying the transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β) in human meniscal fibrochondrocytes as clinically relevant targets for therapy.
