Abstract

Teaching English language as a second language poses a big challenge to the teachers. This is as result of some peculiarities such as the interference phenomenon experienced by learners of second languages. This challenge is even more in the Nigerian situation where you have learners from different background, languages and dialects. This paper tries to examine important issues in teaching phonetics. These are the interference problem that can affect one's speech during communication and how the teacher through the use of appropriate techniques and methods can assist the second language learner overcome these problems.Journal of Technology and Education in Nigeria Vol. 11 (1) 2006: pp. 35-42
