Abstract
Although bipolar disorder (BD) can be managed successfully with medications such as antidepressants, atypical antipsychotics and mood stabilizers, up to 60% of BD patients do not take their medications as prescribed. Barriers to medication adherence can include patient-level and/or external factors. Once the barriers are identified, they can be targeted using psychosocial and medication-related interventions to improve medication adherence and treatment outcomes.
