Abstract

Compared with laminated FRP (Fiber Reinforced Plastic) tube, FRP-foam sandwich tube can improve the stability of the member and better exert the high strength of FRP. It can be used in civil engineering as compression member with lightweight, high bearing capacity and corrosion resistance. In order to study the compression characteristics of this new type of compression member, axial compression tests on the slender FRP-foam sandwich tubes were carried out compared with laminated composite tube. It was found that the main failure mode is overall buckling of this slender sandwich tube. Then the Perry-Robertson's formula based on the edge failure criterion was adopted as the basic form of the overall stability coefficient calculation formula for the sandwich tube. Afterwards the parameters of the formula were obtained based on the experimental results. As a result, the calculation equation of the overall stability coefficient for the FRP-foam sandwich tube was derived.1
