Abstract
SUMMARY Tumor Markers in Ovarian Cancer Serum tumor markers are useful in diagnosis and follow- up for patients with ovarian cancer. Imaging studies and using multiple tumor markers are suggested to improve ovarian cancer diagnosis. Besides, CA-125 has shown to be a useful tumor marker in epithelial ovarian cancer, its specificity is too low to be used as a screening test. CA-125 is a useful marker in monitoring chemotherapy response and in the follow-up of patients with histologi- cally proven ovarian cancer. Serum α FP and βhCG are useful serum tumor markers in the preoperative evaluation and management of nondysgerminomatous ovarian germ cell tumors. The future for tumor marker research is repre- sented by the emerging technologies of transcriptional profiling and proteomics, which include combination of two dimensional electrophoresis with mass-spectrometry.
