Abstract
AbstractIn the female shrimp, Paratya compressa, reared in the absence of males, ovarian development was usually delayed, whereas it occurred normally in females reared with mature males. Ovarian development also occurred in shrimps reared in water that contained an extract of the testis or the vas deferens. Therefore, it is proposed that mature, male shrimps secrete an ovary‐stimulating pheromone which accelerates ovarian development, the source of which may be male organs such as the testis or the vas deferens.
