Abstract

Administration of an eyestalk extract in Ringer solution, of the crab Paratelphusa hydrodromous (Herbst) suppresses ovarian function in adult females of the cockroach Periplaneta americana (L). The effective principle, which may be the ovaryinhibiting hormone (OIH) contained in the eyestalk, or some substance mimicking OIH functionally, results in an inhibition of ovarian growth accompanied by an accumulation of stainable material in the brain-corpus cardiacum-corpus allatum neuroendocrine complex. The “OIH” may thus act indirectly on the ovary. Polyacrylamide-dise electrophoresis of the plasma of treated animals reveals an accumulation of materials with protein and carbohydrate properties in a fraction which is normally utilized by the ovary and thus seems to represent the sex-limited blood protein.
