Abstract

The ultrastructural characteristics of a surface papilloma and of a serous cystadenofibroma in a Rhesus monkey ( Macaca mulatta) ovary, are described. The papilloma has many ciliated cells, similar in fine structure to ciliated cells of the monkey oviductal epithelium. The non-ciliated cells bear a close resemblance to the coelomic covering of the monkey ovary. The epithelial lining of the serous cystadenofibroma is ultrastructurally indistinguishable from the epithelial lining of the monkey oviduct and contains secretory, ciliated and “peg-cells”. As in the human, these observations support the concept of the multipotential metaplastic capacity of the ovarian coelomic epithelium to differentiate into a Müllerian (tubal) type of epithelium.
