Abstract

Background: Super-infection of a dermoid cyst is an extremely rare event. We report the case of a mature cystic teratoma primarily infected with methicillin-sensitive staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) that led to the misdiagnosis of appendicitis with subsequent appendectomy. The purpose of this report is to present a novel presentation of a super-infected dermoid cyst and review the appropriate pre-operative evaluation and surgical management of newly diagnosed ovarian masses in the adolescent population.
