Abstract

A difinition of the arterial blood pressure is put forward, and the author gives a historical review of the developement of the sphygmomanometer, from the pr.mitive instrument of Stephen Hales to modern sphygmomanometers (Manotest). A brief description of a sphygmomanos meter is given. Reflections on the normal systolic and diastolic blood pressure are given, with references to publications by Master and others. The author díscusses symptomatic hypertension from a differentíal point of view, and it is emphasized that hypertensio arterialis maligna is a rare disease. The most important diseases with symptomatic hypertension are discussed. The symptomatologi of hypertensio arterialis essentialis maligna are brought in mind, particular stress being laid on changes in optic fundi, electrocardiogram, and X*ray of the heart. The classification of patients ad modum Hammerstrom and Bechgaard are described and Jiscussed. Principles of therapeutics are put forward with a brief discription of the sympatectomi and a thorough description of drug therapeutics, with special regard to veratrum viride derivatives, reserpine, hydralazine, hexamethonium, pentolonium, mecamylamine, oxaditone, and guanethidine.
