Abstract

system. Among these medically unreached groups are derelict, homeless men; homebound sick people; and the aged who have borderline physical capacity (1-6). Through the Department of Community Medicine at St. Vincent's Hospital of New York, we have brought professional services to these medically unreached groups for the past six years. Physicians, nurses, and social workers from the hospital work in close association with the Visiting Nurse Service of New York and community groups and individuals. Success has depended, to a major degree, on the planning ability and independent role of nurses as health workers(7). The three outreach programs in which we have demonstrated nursing in coequal roles with medicine are (a) the welfare hotel programs for derelicts, (b) the Chelsea-Village program for the homebound aged, and (c) the nurses' clinic for the aged persons who are severely restricted but not literally homebound.
