Abstract

A numerical simulation of a virtual cathode oscillator with cylindrical drift tube has been performed by a 3 dimensional particle-in-cell (PIC) code called MAGIC under the various cathode radii and anode-cathode gap distances. Also the experimental studies are performed for comparison with the numerical results. The object for this investigation is to find the optimized length and diameter of cylindrical waveguide for the high power microwave waveguide generated from a pulser. It is noted in this experiment that the output microwave with narrow band can be obtained in the cylindrical waveguide whose diameter is 16 cm. Experimental results show the main frequency is 2 ~ 2.5 GHz from this axial vircator with solid carbon cathode.
