Abstract

Auerbachs Keller | Leipzig, Germany Located inLeipzig's historical district, Auerbachs Keller is an almost five-hundred year-old restaurant and bar. It is most famous forhaving been fre quented by JohannWolfgang von Goethe in the eighteenth century, who used Auerbachs Keller as the setting lor Mephistopheles' first excursion with the titular student in Faust I. While itwas primar ily a wine bar in Goethe's day, the modern restaurant specializes in traditional German food: vari ous woodland creatures served in assorted brown sauces. Much to the restaurant's credit, the menu also includes a vegetarian dish. When I visited the restau rant this summer, my entire party ordered wild boar, and I got the vegetables in cheese sauce. My companions' food showed up as fist-sized spheres of meat accom panied by small, identically shaped dumplings. My food was as deli cious as theirs was geometrical, and although I didn't get to seeMephis topheles impress a group of revel ers by conjuring wine from thin air, I did witness a green-suited a capella choir fromBavaria impress a group of Japanese touristsby sing ing "happy birsday" toone of them. - ChrisDearner Chris Dearner isa recent graduate of the Uni versityofOklahoma who simultaneously snuck out with degrees in linguisticsand English. 801World Literature Today ...
