Abstract

eConsults are asynchronous encounters usually between a specialist and a primary care physician completed entirely through the electronic medical record (EMR) to obtain clinical guidance about questions that may not require a referral or to aid in the decision of whether to refer. The initiating provider submits clinical information in a prebuilt EMR-based form to a specialist who reviews the information and responds through the EMR-based form with clinical recommendations and whether to refer the patient.
