Abstract

The mesoscopic concept introduces field quantities defined on an enlarged domain, the mesoscopic space, which takes into account the internal structure of the complex material. In addition, a mesoscopic distribution function is introduced as a statistical element. Some examples are mentioned, and the mesoscopic theory of liquid crystals is presented in more detail. Balance equations on the mesoscopic level are presented, and constitutive equations are discussed. Order parameters, the alignment tensors, are introduced, based on the orientation distribution function. The second-order alignment tensor is the internal variable, introduced in Chap. 7.
