Abstract

monitor, and forecast the storms, (d) the impact of the storms, with the emphasis on damaging floods, landslides and coastal waves, and (e) the socio-economical aspects of damaging storms. We invited 25 experts, who had contributed to previous Plinius conferences, to be part of the Scientific Committee and to help convene fourteen different sessions. We selected specialists for nine keynote addresses. We can say that the Plinius-9 Conference was a success. This is shown by the considerable number of abstracts submitted (170), by the attendance of 137 scientists from Europe, Middle East, Australia and the United States, and by the many papers that have resulted from the Conference. Introduction

The conference was held at the International Congress Centre Villa Monastero. The selection of the site was based on several motivations.
