Abstract

Introduction: In 1987, total replacement of the temporomandibular joint was introduced to the United Kingdom when the Kent VKII system became available. Currently there are three available systems: the Christensen system (1992), the TMJ Concepts System (2000) and the Lorenz System (2001). In 1988, TMJ replacement surgery commenced in Birmingham and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital has an established reputation for providing this service.
