Outcomes of liver resection for huge hepatocellular carcinoma exceeding 10 cm in size: A single center experience

Abstract

BackgroundTo evaluate our experience of resection for huge hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) (exceeding 10 cm in diameter). MethodsWe reviewed the patients’ data who underwent liver resection for huge HCC between 2010 and 2019. We divided them into two groups according to liver resection extent (minor/major). Results40 patients were included. Minor Group included 19 patients (47.5%), and Major Group included 21 patients (52.5%). Longer operation time, hospital stay, and more severe complications were found in Major Group.The 1-, 3-, and 5-years OS rates were 76.6%, 39.5%, and 39.5%, respectively. The 1-, 3-, and 5-year DFS rates were 65.6%, 40%, and 0%, respectively. There were no significant differences between the two groups regarding OS (p = 0.598) and DFS (p = 0.564). ConclusionLiver resection for huge HCC is associated with average morbidities and mortality. Proper selection, adequate techniques and standardized care can provide favorable patients’ survival.
