Abstract

Myocardial depression in septic patients is a known phenomenon first described in 1984. Despite normal or increased cardiac output, these patients often develop a depressed ejection fraction and stroke volume. Although generalized cardiovascular dysfunction in sepsis has been associated with increased mortality, there is limited data on the survival of septic patients with cardiomyopathy.
