• Under-represented minority (URM) recruitment and retention were cultivated with a comprehensive program. • Financial support was helpful, but not enough, for URM retention success. • Comprehensive supports included academic, social/emotional, and cultural. • Leadership and professional development were cultivated by URM peers and alumni. • A dedicated retention coordinator was the key component to URM program success.
