Abstract

TMJ ankylosis is a highly debilitating state and encompasses structural, developmental, growth and aesthetic problems. Early surgical management is advocated in order to decrease the degree of the primary deformity and enable the patient to achieve an optimal function. The paper presents long-term results of management of TMJ ankylosis in two groups: group 1 treated with costochondral graft and group 2 using temporalis muscle interpositional arthroplasty. Comparative outcomes of the two surgical procedures will be presented for maximum interincisal opening, deviation, symmetry, facial growth, patient satisfaction and recurrence rate.
