Abstract

An outbreak of enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) O157:H7 (VT1+VT2) infection started in primary schools in Oku-cho, Okayama prefecture, Japan, on May 28, 1996, and involved 468 patients, two of whom developed haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS) and died. Outbreaks due to the same agent occurred in Gifu, Hiroshima, Aichi, Fukuoka, and Okayama (Niimi City) prefectures. On July 13, 1996, a large outbreak of EHEC O157:H7(VT1+VT2) infection occurred in primary schools in Sakai City, Osaka prefecture, affecting more than 6000 children.
