Abstract
To the Editor:— An outbreak of herpangina occurred in Tokyo from April of this year; over 60 patients have been observed. Many of the cases occurred in several dormitories scattered in Tokyo, which include from about 40 to over 100 households, whereas about 15 cases are sporadic. The clinical picture, throat lesions, clinical course, age distribution, and other features correspond closely with those described in the United States by Zahorsky, Levine, and others; Huebner and others; Parrot and others; and Kravis and others. Clinical and etiological studies are now in progress. Attempts to isolate the causal agent in suckling mice were carried out, and almost all fecal specimens from patients tested were found to contain Coxsackie virus; each of the suckling mice inoculated with fecal specimens from patients developed the typical flaccid paralysis characteristic of Coxsackie virus infection. Those strains isolated seem to belong to group A of Coxsackie virus
