Abstract

This paper presents the results of the analysis of the complete DC Circuit inventory within the North American Bulk Power System (BPS) and the corresponding outage data collected in the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) Transmission Availability Data System (TADS). For the detailed investigation and analysis, basic reliability indices for Automatic and Non-automatic Operational and Planned Outages (i.e., element outage frequency and duration, mean time to outage, and element availability) are calculated and comparative statistical tests are performed. The element reliability function is derived for DC Circuits by voltage class. Previously published comparative results for other AC transmission Elements reportable in TADS (i.e., AC Circuits and Transformers) are also provided and contrasted to the DC Circuit performance.
