Claire Douglas, “Out of the Depths: Where the Dance Is,” Keynote Address: The North American Conference of Jungian Analysts & Candidates: Using the Compass of Analytical Psychology: Our Emerging Ways, San Francisco, October 26-29, 2006. JUNG JOURNAL, Summer 2007, 1:3, 15-32. This talk, through personal, clinical, and cultural inquiry, reclaims shadow, dance, and the feminine Self from the depths. Two of Jung's statements are explored from this vantage point: “I live in the deepest hell, and from there I cannot fall any further,” and “the divine form in a woman is a woman.” Examples of strong, chthonic, non-dualistic and peaceful feminine archetypes are presented as healing alternatives to a world out of balance. The feminine Self, especially her chthonic aspect, provides an overlooked counterweight to our destructive inner and outer worlds. A conscious integration
