Abstract
No such thing as humanitarian intervention now exists in human society. Whenever politicians appeal to it, one can be almost certain that selfish nation‐state interests lie behind it. Real humanitarian intervention presupposes the organization of international peace enforcement units—not having one of the superpowers playing the role of world policeman. Two decades ago, a popular U.S. television series entitled “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” described the imaginary adventures of a cosmopolitan hero and his sidekick who traveled to the far corners of the globe to right the world's injustices. For this fiction of humanitarian intervention to come to life, we need a real UNCLE: a United Nations Center for Law Enforcement.
