Abstract

The article deals with the uses of the word in the Hebrew Bible. It offers a post-modern, literary perspective on the use of the word while providing close readings of several Biblical texts and fragments that illustrate this use: the dialogue between Ruth and Naomi (Ruth 1,15-16), the struggle between Jacob and “somebody” at the Jabbok (Gen 32,25-33), the Golden Calf episode (Exodus 32) and the monotheistic/monolatrous declaration in Deuteronomy (Deut 6,4). The author views the word as as a “scandal in the system”, deconstructing the central opposition(s) of the Hebrew Bible, like a joker in a card game that can assume the meaning of every other card.
