Abstract
At the ENT clinic of the Martin Luther University in Halle (Saale) about 70 patients with laryngeal cancer are treated annually. Nearly 60% of these required a total laryngectomy. An analysis of the past 10 years proved that 80% of these patients learn to use oesophageal speech and can communicate with other people. Only 22% of these have a good public speaking voice and can use the telephone etc. 20% of them remain “non-speakers”.
