Abstract

Otitis media with effusion is a very common disease in children and presents with conductive hearing loss. The child may be inattentive in school. The color of the tympanic membrane may be amber or yellowish. In mucoid types the appearance of the tympanic membrane becomes dull, opaque, and vascularized. In advanced stages the tympanic membrane is retracted and the length of the malleus looks shortened. If the patient does not respond to medical treatment, myringotomy and ventilation tube insertion may be necessary. Unilateral otitis media with effusion in adults requires a detailed investigation for nasopharyngeal carcinoma.
