Abstract

Listeriosis usually presents as bacteraemia or meningitis in foetuses, neonates and adults. Listeria monocitogenes and Listeria iovanii are the only humans pathogens among the six species in this genus, because they express a protein, listeriolysin O that is the main factor in the virulence to survive inside the macrophage. However, under special microbiolo gical and clinical conditions (high bacterial inoculum, patient with serious illnesses or cellular immunity suppressed) focal infections can take place as endocarditis, arthritis or pleuritis, by other Listeria species. So this, every microorganism must be studied both clinical and microbiological before it be rejected as infectious agent. We present a case of suppurative otitis media due to Listeria grayi, secondary to a viral pharyngotonsillitis, in a type I diabetes mellitus patient.
