Abstract

The prevalence of otitis media in premature infants of 1,001 to 1,500 grams birth weight was investigated by examining 49 petrous temporal bones, including the ear drum, from 28 unselected cases. Microscopic examination of histologic sections revealed pus in the cavities of the middle ear from 19 of the 28 cases. The high prevalence of otitis media in this group of premature infants suggests that infection may play an important role in premature morbidity and mortality.
