Abstract

The identification of the competences which have a critical role in the effectiveness of the hotel managers is expected to contribute to increasing the success of the tourism sector. Competencies refer to knowledge, skills, abilities, attitudes, traits, and characteristics that are desirable or necessary for individuals to perform job. The purpose of this study is to determine the competence of hotel managers and investigate whether there are differences in terms in competence of resort hotels and city hotels. In the study, quantitative methods were used in data collection and analysis. Izmir was defined as the area which business and resort hotels in can be analyzed together. Data were collected from the city hotels on the center and Cesme resort hotels. Data were collected from three, four and five stars hotels. The collected data were analyzed by SPSS 20 software program. Firstly reliability, validity were tested, and hypotheses were tested with gap analysis. Findings showed that managers’ competencies were gathered under seven dimensions. Management Competencies showed difference in the factors which are manager’s education level, management level, work experience, department, and class, except for the type of hotels. The obtained results can be useful for future hotel managers, human resources managers and tourism education institutions
