Abstract

The use of medications during pregnancy has increased In the last three decades. Pregnant women use medications including both over-the-counter drugs and prescription medications. The pregnant women reported using at least one prescription or over-the-counter medication during pregnancy, including during the first trimester, a critical period of organogenesis. Common over-the-counter drugs categories of readily accessible medications include antipyretics, analgesics, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, H-antihistamines, decongestants, expectorants, antacids, antidiarrheal, and topical dermatological medications. For most medications commonly used in pregnancy, there are insufficient data available to characterize the exact fetal risk, limiting the opportunity for informed clinical decisions about the best management of acute and chronic disorders during pregnancy.
