Abstract
The Federal Office of Technology Assessment (OTA) report titled ‘Space Science Research in the United States’ has recognized the important need to protect planetary sciences from ‘mission‐oriented’ budget cuts that tend to wipe out auxiliary and supporting programs. Planetary science is defined in this sense as data and analysis studies from continuing and completed missions, general planetary research activities, instrument design, and smaller missions. This type of research employs most of the core of nonastronomer space scientists who frequently turn their attention to the major missions but then return to analysis, theory, and experiments between the missions.
