Ostomy-Stomal/Peristomal Complications

Abstract

PURPOSE/RATIONALE: Stoma and peristomal skin problems are commonly seen in practice. They can pose a significant burden to the physical, psychological, and financial well-being of a patient with an ostomy. A review of the literature indicates peristomal/ stoma complications ranging from 6%–76%.1–8 The purpose of this poster is to present data on stoma and peristomal skin problems identified from June 1997 through March, 2009 prospectively collected in the stoma registry database of our institution. As of October 2008, 9852 individuals were listed in the registry. DESCRIPTION: A computerized stoma registry database was begun at our institution in June 1997. Upon formation of a stoma or initial presentation of a stoma patient to our institution, a registry form is completed identifying gender, medical diagnosis, and type of stoma. A separate form captures select surgical details as well as the initial pouching system used by category. A nonsurgical event form is generated at follow-up hospital and ambulatory clinic visits. This form tracks stoma and peristomal skin problems, pouching system used, and modifications made to that system. RESULTS: Data will be presented in table format indicating medical diagnosis, type of stoma, stoma and peristomal skin problems as well as general recommendations for pouching system revision. CONCLUSION: This data will delineate stoma/peristomal skin problems found in our patient population. This information will serve as a continued discussion point for these issues as well as identify areas for future research.
