Abstract

Otitis media and polyps are the main diseases of the middle ear in cats. Otitis media most often results as extension of chronic otitis externa, while polyps are secondary to chronic inflammation in the middle ear. When the polyp grows through the auditory tube toward the nasopharynx, it is denominated nasopharyngeal polyp. Another condition is characterized by rupture of the tympanic membrane by the polyp, which emerges into the external ear canal. Ventral bulla osteotomy is the surgical procedure indicated for the treatment of these diseases. Its purpose is to remove inflammatory tissues present in the tympanic cavity. Despite complications like Horner’s syndrome or damage to the inner ear, ventral bulla osteotomy is a useful surgical procedure for resolving otitis media and middle ear polyps in cats. The objective of this review is to report these diseases and describe the surgical technique of ventral bulla osteotomy.
