Abstract

Prostheses made entirely of dense hydroxyapatite have been designed to reconstruct ears ravaged by disease including the effects of acute and chronic otitis media. These prostheses were patterned after homograft ossicular prostheses, which had been used successfully for a number of years. The advantages of the hydroxyapatite models over their bony counterparts is their ready availability, consistent, standardized shape, long shelf life and no tendency to deteriorate over the longer term.
