Abstract

One of the most remarkable characteristics of certain marine algae is their ability to survive and to withstand changes in the osmotic concentration of seawater. Certain marine algae tolerate salt concentrations ranging from 0.1 to 3.0 times that of seawater (BIEBL, 1952; BIEBL, 1958; EPPLEY and CYRUS, 1960). In nature the phenomenon of marine algal osmotic tolerance toward large changes in salinity is often associated with intertidal habitats and salt lakes.
