Abstract

Ottoman chronicles generally begin with praise and glory to Allah and prayers and peace upon the Prophet. Then the author introduces himself and gives the name of his work, after which he explains the reason for compiling it. In this article, we will focus on the reasons why certain general and special histories from the fifteenth century onwards, and also some monographic works, were compiled. In our research, we discovered that the vast majority of authors gave the following reasons for compiling their works: to enlighten the public, to rewrite what had been written before and had been found to be wrong, and to comply with the orders and recommendations given to them. A significant part of them compiled their works because they saw history as a respected science due to the parables in the Qur’an.
