Abstract

This inspection by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) was the result of a media referral. The media reported that three researchers had acquired tularemia as a result of their work activities in a research facility. The report also indicated that researchers working on a tularemia vaccine project in a Biosafety Level 2 (BSL2) research facility had possibly violated biological safety practices and that engineering controls were not used or maintained. As a result of published accounts of possible hazards to workers, an unannounced inspection of the research facility was conducted.
