Abstract

Structural systems are quite susceptible to oscillations induced by winds. There exists no effective means to reduce or even dampen the dangerous motion of the structure. The more effective vibration absorbers have some disadvantages such as adjustment and servicing and may therefore not be employed in space structures. A new damping device is suggested consisting of a liquid container filled with two immiscible liquids, in which the motion of the interface is able to dampen the structure effectively. For this reason the necessary liquid theory is derived, with which a mathematical mechanical model is presented. The effectiveness of the system for a cantilever beam is shown.
