Abstract
We have performed a simulation study of a passivating metal surface in contact with electrolyte solution, using recently published 3D cellular automaton model. In the simulations, we observe oscillations of current and potential under potentiostatic and galvanostatic control, respectively. We have also rendered snapshots of the metal surface during several periods of oscillation. In the presented case the surface consists of active (bare metal) domains surrounded by passivated area. In analogy to the breathing mode of 1D models this pattern vanishes and reappears during the cycles.
