Abstract

In this chapter, the state-of-the-art design and optimisation methods for oscillating water column wave energy devices are presented. The chapter starts with a brief introduction to the recent developments in OWC wave energy converter design. Then, the working principles for various types of OWC devices are introduced. Existing OWC prototype devices are briefly reviewed. This is followed by an OWC device optimisation case study. Here, the development of a numerical model and an experimental investigation of OWC devices are presented. By considering the effects of wave conditions and geometric parameters, the hydrodynamic performance of two different types of OWC device (i.e., single- and dual-chamber OWC devices) are investigated. The case study focuses on the optimisation of the devices’ hydrodynamic efficiency and wave load on the devices. Finally, some important observations are summarised at the end of this chapter.
